Intel, IBM ink deal to co-develop products for telematics market Semiconductor Business News (10/16/00, 03:13:40 PM EDT)
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Intel Corp. and IBM Corp. here today entered the telematics market by announcing an alliance to co-develop products based on this emerging technology for automobiles.
Under the plan, the companies intend to co-develop system-level products and reference design kits based on Intel's XScale chip technology and IBM's VisualAge Micro Edition Java application development tools.
These kits will enable OEMs to develop telematics-enabled platforms for cars. Among the applications for these platforms include cellular services, Internet-access, navigation, entertainment, and others.
"We anticipate that the efforts and expertise of both companies will create a truly open and standards-based platform that will help engineers and developers achieve a fast start [in developing telematics-based products]," said Pat Kerrigan, marketing manager at Intel's In-Car Computing Operation.
"Automotive computing is an important and growing market segment that both Intel and IBM serve with advanced technology and products," said Skip McGaughey, director of marketing and sales for IBM's OTI embedded system group.
"With this announcement, IBM takes the important step to broaden VisualAge Micro Edition to embrace Intel's Xscale microarchitecture," he added. "We welcome this opportunity to join with Intel to increase the availability of standard Java technology across leading automotive platforms." |
