Dear Myron it gets very difficult to explain human pharmacology to a lay person ; I don't intend to sound condescending but that is the problem . I don't want to bore with the details so I 'll keep it simple: The best and quickest way for you to learn the truth about phentolamine is to ask your pharmacist or a cardiologist if you have or know of one. Here is what I know ( off the top of my head because I heven't used phentolamine and I leave all my books in the office. Phentolamine /Regitine has been around for years ,~ >30. Doctors are inquisitive folks by nature and as soon as they find that a drug works for a disease by one route, IV for example, them around the world start tinkering with it by intra muscular , oral, as an enemma, put it on your skin, on your hair etc etc for any number of diseases, first in animals and then in humans . It is called experimentation. ( I hope I haven't lost anybody so far ,ESPECIaLLY EDDERD because I know how he feels about pharmacology!!!!( just kidding Eddie ). Alright we now have had Regitne in use for 30 years by IV and IM ( as well recently through relatively unapproved 'gray aerea' of penile injections> However Doctors being very knowlegable folks are allowed to use approved drugs for yet tobe approved uses ( penile inj. ) as long as they are willing to suffer the legal consequences. Generally speaking when most of them suceed in such an unofficial drug delivery nobody complains and the FDA closes one eye. Not infrequently after years of successful unoffical use of a drug somebody finally runs " an official study " and the FDA finally gives the official OK . I think this is how it goes . Am i correct Eddie?
So if Regitine has been around for yers and given in the large doses IV and IM don't you think some patient would have complained of getting erections and the Doc noticed it and written up about it : hey, we got an impotence cure!! Yet not a whisper in thirty years. Further more whereas most drugs come in 3 forms IV , IM , and orally ( sometimes 5' enamas and skin lotions or eye ointm etc that darn Regitine IS NOT MADE FOR oral use . Nobody here wonder why ? Well because there is a good reason(s): it either doesn't work and/or is unsafe or both. To be honest with yoy I DON't KNOW why Regitine hasn't been made in oral form all these years. My guess from what I read is that it is rapidly metabolized , within minutes after infusion. this is why it has to be given by continuous IV drip. Also because it is a POWERFUL VASODILATOR that produces severe Hypotension; so that it is currently approved officially only for 1) therapy of severe Hypetensive emergencies in particular those caused by the tumor Pheochromocytoma 2) to prevent skin necrosis from Dopamine infiltration ( don't have time to explain that3 after load reduction therapy for sever cogastive heart failure in the INT care unit. Tis the 2nd and last time I am ging over Regitine.Ask your Doc and Pharm. D for morer deteils. Oral regitine for impotenc? The studies you quote I haven't read but I am fairly confident they are a fraud like Bre-X mines. I don,t know what happened at the stockholder's meeting. My guess from what I know is that the company is very comfortable with the sales and outlook of their product/and manufacturing enterprise and don't really care too much about Stock market gyrations. Time will tell So long guys > Gone fishing for Memorial day! See ya Tuesday. ( I warn you though no more free educetional info on Pharmacology. As of Tuesday there will be a small charge ). |
