FLEXION PARTNERS WITH TACHION TO DELIVER BROADBAND VOICE AND DATA SERVICES TO NEXT GENERATION SERVICE PROVIDERS

Intelligent Edge Solution and Broadband Services Switch Enable On-Demand Converged Services via High-Speed, Low-Cost Architecture to Small Businesses

San Francisco – October 16, 2000 – Flexion Systems, a provider of managed business solutions for the growing company, and Tachion Networks, innovators of the Collapsed Central Office, today announced that they have signed a joint cooperation agreement to deliver end-to-end high-speed broadband services to next generation service providers. In addition to leveraging joint marketing and sales opportunities, Flexion and Tachion will develop integrated product solutions that will allow service providers and Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs) to enjoy the benefits of industry leading intelligent edge and central office devices.

Tachion Networks is the innovator of the Collapsed Central Office based on the Fusion 5000™, a central office platform that provides integrated transport, switching, routing and signaling in a single platform, instead of the more traditional multidevice system architecture where a Class 5 central office switch is mated with a variety of data and access switches. The Tachion solution enables service providers to roll out more services to more cities in less time for less money.

Focusing on the needs of the emerging CLEC marketplace, Flexion designs, manufactures and markets Flexion BusinessGuardian™, the brand family name for its one-stop communication and IT solutions for small businesses. Flexion’s flagship product offering, the BusinessGuardian X300, is an integrated communications platform that allows next generation service providers to decrease their own costs while increasing service offerings to the small business, resulting in higher customer retention and increased revenues.

The interoperability of Flexion’s BusinessGuardian X300 and Tachion's Fusion 5000 broadband services switch enables service providers and CLECs to extend the benefits of ATM from the core of the converged, packet-switched network down to the small office.

“More and more, innovative service providers are looking to provide the services traditionally supplied by an applications services provider (ASP), offering everything from dial tone to the management of desktop applications,” says Andrew Bale, president and chief executive officer of Flexion Systems. “Together, Flexion and Tachion have created a complete end-to-end architecture that allows these service providers to increase their service offerings to the small business – this results in higher customer retention and increased revenues for the service provider hungry to grow their business.”

"For both the service provider and the small business, there is an increasing emphasis on the delivery of enhanced services as opposed to basic connectivity," says Jeff Matros, president and chief executive officer of Tachion Networks. "The partnership between Flexion and Tachion provides the telecommunications infrastructure necessary to meet the needs of innovative CLECs and the ever more demanding small business community.”

The end-to-end nature of the Flexion/Tachion solution will provide a number of key benefits to service provider and small business alike. For the service provider, such a solution will speed up network build-out and the time to realize a return on investment. For small businesses, Flexion/Tachion packet-based broadband solutions provide voice and data services as well as powerful business applications – such as unified messaging, computer telephony integration (CTI) and auto attendant – that allow them to compete more effectively.

"Increasingly, next-generation service providers look less like the 'telephone company' and more like business partners, providing analysis, applications integration, and communications in a one-stop shop," says Christin Flynn, program manager with The Yankee Group in Boston. "The ability to deliver intelligence from the network down to the business itself is becoming more of a requirement as service providers look to grow their networks and increase their service offerings to the small business."
