Ames partners with grass-roots organizations
to benefit new store communities

Ames Department Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMES) announced today that it would
present not-for-profit organizations serving their newest communities with donations
from its Ames Stores Foundation. Check presentations will take place as part of the
Company's Grand Opening Celebrations on October 19, 2000.

"We believe very strongly in becoming active members of the communities we serve,"
commented Joseph R. Ettore, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Ames.
"Grand Opening morning is the perfect time to make a statement of commitment to
these communities and stand as partners with the grass-roots organizations dedicated
to making a difference in the day-to-day lives of our customers."

Ames identified a variety of organizations whose programs directly benefit the
communities served by their new Ames stores. The charities receiving Ames Stores
Foundation contributions as part of the chain's October 19th Grand Opening
celebrations are:

-- Aunt Martha's Youth Services
to benefit the Dolton, Illinois community
-- New Horizon Center
Serving the citizens of the city of Chicago's Ward Number 38
-- Northeast Parent & Child Society
to benefit the Latham, NY community

Along with the local store manager, the senior Ames executive in attendance will
present the Ames Stores Foundation checks to representatives of each organization
just prior to the 9:00 am ribbon-cutting ceremonies.

The Ames Stores Foundation, established in 1998, is dedicated to supporting worthy
causes and organizations whose focus is consistent with the mission of the
Foundation. There are four major areas of commitment: Children's Health; Youth
Development; Social Awareness and Community Welfare. Funded programs directly
benefit the communities served by an Ames store, distribution center, or the home
office.
