Grand Opening of Its 96th Store in New York

Latham Ames bumps Capital Region store count to nine;
local employment to 775
Ames Department Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMES) announced today it would
celebrate the Grand Opening of its newest New York location on October 19,
2000. The new store, located in the Albany suburb of Latham, is the second Capital
region store to open this year. Ames celebrated the opening of a Schenectady, New
York location last July 20, 2000.
With the opening of Ames' Latham store, located in New Loudon Center at 855
New Loudon Road, Ames' statewide presence increases to 96 retail stores.

The company will celebrate two additional Grand Openings on October 19th, both
in the greater Chicago area, to bring the chain's total to 479 stores.
Ames senior executives, store associates and local dignitaries will kick-off the
Grand Opening Celebrations on Thursday, October 19, 2000, with a ribbon-cutting
ceremony at 9:00 a.m. Special Grand Opening events include live musical
entertainment, product samplings and demonstrations, costumed characters,
giveaways and sweepstakes. These special events will continue through Saturday,
October 21, 2000.
