this is simply not a true statement. The man who pissed you off by looking at your girlfriend did SOMETHING apart from his status- the gay person is being beaten up for WHO he is. This is a tremendous difference, imo. You don't have to agree- but I hope you can at least see that there is a difference. There are characteristics unique to the person- I don't like YOu, YOU did something to ME, and then there are class characteristics- so beating someone up simply because they are black OR white, or gay is a hate crime and should be classed differently if we want to try to stomp out people viewing each other as part of collectives and not as individuals. I am for stomping out the concept of viewing people as members of collectives, and the actions taken violently upon that view.

If someone killed you simply because you are white (and I'm assuming you are) that crime should be held up as an example of hatred, by classifying it as a hate crime. I like that. It doesn't diminish other forms of murder (imo)- it merely makes a statement about hatred.
