Insignia's Jeode Platform To Support Newly-Announced ARM Jazelle Technology

FREMONT, Calif., Oct 17, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Insignia Solutions(R) (Nasdaq: INSGY chart, msgs), the leading provider of accelerated Java(TM) solutions for Internet appliances and embedded devices, announced today its plans for its Jeode(TM) platform to support ARM's (Nasdaq: ARMHY chart, msgs) newly-announced Jazelle(TM) technology, an extension to the ARM(R) architecture to execute Java bytecodes.

Insignia will optimize its patented dynamic adaptive compilation technology to increase performance of the native code for the new Jazelle technology. In addition, it will explore methods for better Java bytecode execution through hardware acceleration. The company will also integrate its patent-pending technologies (including garbage collection and memory management) with the Jazelle extension.

"Insignia has an excellent reputation for successfully delivering a fully Java-compatible software solution, and is one of several partners engaging with ARM to support our new Jazelle technology," said David Cormie, product marketing manager, ARM. "Our respective technologies are very complementary in terms of how they can provide a comprehensive and highly-optimized Java solution for ARM Powered(TM) devices."

"ARM is an important strategic partner for Insignia; our Jeode platform is being deployed in a number of ARM Powered products and Insignia is a member of the ARM partnership for Java," said Jon Hoskin, chief technical officer with Insignia Solutions. "ARM's decision to offer an accelerated Java bytecode processor validates the great interest of developers in deploying Java technology, and we commend ARM for making Java technology a key focus of their product offerings."

Hoskin continued, "We feel that a combined hardware-software approach has the capability to deliver the best possible performance -- even better than software-only or hardware-only strategies. We are confident that we can deliver a complete and optimized solution for customers that not only delivers head-turning performance, but also meets other key developer requirements, such as full compatibility, robust and reliable behavior, efficient memory management and configurability."

Jeode Platform

The Jeode platform is Insignia's accelerated implementation of Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW chart, msgs) PersonalJava(TM) and EmbeddedJava(TM) specifications tailored for Internet appliances and embedded devices. At the core of the Jeode platform is the "Sun Authorized Virtual Machine," the Jeode Embedded Virtual Machine(TM) (EVM(TM)), an accelerated runtime engine that delivers an optimal balance of performance and responsiveness in a smaller memory footprint. Using a proprietary technique called dynamic adaptive compilation, the Jeode EVM can execute Java applications on average six times faster than interpretive VMs.

Key attributes include:

-- A full-featured implementation compatible with Sun's
PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava specifications

-- Industry leading accelerated performance and efficient memory
utilization.

-- Configurability and tunability to meet the diverse needs of
Internet appliance and embedded device developers

-- A turn-key solution already ported and tested on popular
RTOS/processor combinations

-- World class support, training, consulting, customization and
development tools
The Jeode platform is designed to run with a wide range of operating systems and target processors. It currently supports operating systems such as Windows CE (including the Pocket PC version), Windows NT Embedded, Windows NT, VxWorks, ITRON and Linux, and processors such as MIPS, ARM, Intel x86, PowerPC and Hitachi SH-3 and SH-4.
