Mobile Computing Corporation Launches m-LINX - Making Wireless Integration Easy

Hewlett-Packard and Sybase Supporting m-LINX Mobile Workforce Solution

Toronto Stock Exchange Symbol: MBL

TORONTO, ON and SANTA CLARA, CA, Oct. 17 /CNW/ - Wireless e-mail and
enterprise applications. Access to multiple wireless networks. Flexible mobile
device choices. Access to multiple peripheral attachments. An integrated
solution combining these components is crucial to the mobile worker but has
been difficult to obtain in one solution. Mobile Computing Corporation (MCC)
(MBL:TSE), a supplier of wireless information solutions for mobile workers,
announced today the availability of m-LINX Mobile Worker, a complete mobile
solution package designed specifically for enterprises with a mobile
workforce. The announcement was made from the Sybase iAnywhere booth at the
CTIA Wireless I.T. 2000 Conference in Santa Clara, California. MCC's solution
incorporates individual modules that encompass the core application
requirements that are common to mobile workers. Both Sybase and Hewlett-
Packard Company (HP) have lent support and expertise in assisting with the
development of this solution. Additionally, Sybase has partnered with MCC by
embedding components of their iAnywhere Wireless Server into the package.
The m-LINX Mobile Worker solution package includes: an HP Jornada 720
Windows CE PDA complete with a custom in-vehicle cradle, MCC's m-Xpander,
which enables multiple peripheral attachments; a wireless data modem; MCC's m-
Mail wireless e-mail software; MCC's m-LINX Dispatch and Work Order Management
software, and MCC's MAX wireless routing software, which enables seamless
access to a range of wireless data networks. The solution design incorporates
the ability to operate as a complete, standalone offering or in conjunction
with existing legacy systems, and provides the opportunity for additional
device choices in the future.
"Mobile enterprise workforces have long used our handheld PCs and we're
excited that MCC has incorporated the new HP Jornada 720 in their solution,"
said Kok-Khoon Lim, general manager of HP's Asia Pacific PC Division. "The m-
LINX Mobile Worker solution is an excellent example of real world products
that meet the diverse needs of mobile workers and wireless communications for
enterprises."
"As the leader in enabling mobile computing, Sybase uniquely enables
always available solutions, a critical requirement in wireless enterprise
applications," said Rob Veitch, Director of Business Development for Sybase's
iAnywhere Solutions. "As a leader in wireless information solutions, MCC's m-
LINX Mobile Worker is a prime example of an application that must deliver
guaranteed access to critical information, even in the event of disruptions in
wireless connectivity."
The m-LINX Mobile Worker solution is structured utilizing a vehicle-based
wireless radio that allows for improved network coverage, especially in fringe
coverage areas, and improved battery life for the PDA between charges, which
is key for field applications. Additionally, a vehicle-based wireless radio
configuration enables future flexibility of broader Windows CE/Pocket PC
device types that may not have a PCMCIA slot or "wireless sleeve", and
wireless networks which may be utilized.
"Many wireless data applications today are oriented toward consumer
requirements such as stock market quotes or basic e-mail. The m-LINX Mobile
Worker solution is far more comprehensive, enabling real enterprise
applications to function, thereby offering the mobile worker and head office
access to current information easily," said David Cunningham, President and
CEO of MCC. "This solution will enable us to effectively target both OEM and
enterprise markets."
The m-LINX Mobile Worker solution comes on the heels of three earlier
announcements made last month, which introduced the m-Mail wireless e-mail
software application; the m-Xpander, a serial port expander for multiple
peripherals; and MAX wireless TCP/IP routing software. All three of these
individual modules are bundled into the complete solution.
MCC's m-LINX Mobile Worker offering is available for general distribution
in November.
