RESEARCH ALERT - Sprint PCS raised to outperform

NEW YORK, oct 17 (Reuters) - ABN AMRO analyst Kevin Roe said on Tuesday he upgraded Sprint PCS Group <PCS.N>, the wireless telephone arm of Sprint Corp. <FON.N>, to outperform from hold and set a $50 year-end price target.

Roe said he raised the EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) outlook for 2001 to $1.8 billion from $1.5 billion.

Roe said he was "pleased" with Sprint PCS' third-quarter EBTIDA and average revenues monthly revenues per user. Sprint PCS' operating cash flow was $122 million in the third quarter, while average revenue per user was $59 a month.

Roe said he was "pleased" by Sprint PCS' bullish subscriber growth guidance for next year. Sprint PCS told analysts that it expects 2001 subscriber growth for the industry to be similar to 2000 levels, but did not provide additional details.

Shares of Sprint PCS rose 9/16 to $32-5/16 on the New York Stock Exchange.
