During the past 17 years, IWHLDA has generated a tradition of cooperative creation among scientists in providing authoritative information on human cell-surface proteins.

Several close friends and other acquaintances have participated and even driven this process.

In the early days, it really was the work of the unsung. However, as the tools generated became more and more invaluable, the contributors did "OK" for having participated. It wasn't all selfless contribution.

However.... no question.... it has been a model for how data sharing can put research into warp drive.

Labs would pre-order the annual book. It began to look like a telephone book before it was split into two volumes. It's probably a shelf-filler by now. In any event, I'd watch the mail closely, waiting to dig in. I was particularly interested in cluster subdivisions. Couldn't get the info rapidly enough, and there was always competition for reading and review time.
