Agreed. A patent this broad can be very powerful. The problem comes to the courts, it is very hard to win in the courts with such a broad patent because in many cases the court will find in favor of consumers.

CheckFree currently holds a wide variety of patents and they potentially could be used to defend against other EBPP companies claiming patent infringement (i.e. offer to sign cross licensing agreements). Now that CheckFree has bought TransPoint, it doesn't look like they need to worry about it anyway.

Last, I really like customer magnets (which I think is patented). 'Customer Magnets' will be the long term EBPP model of choice, it meets the needs of billers to have consumers visit their website, it solves the customers need to have one central website, logon, etc. It is the best of both worlds.
