"...Dedra Mills' experience highlights the roadblocks that advocates for the poor say Bush constructed--or allowed to stand--that keep people from getting the benefits they deserve.

Texas is one of only three states in the country that has not changed the complicated Medicaid application procedure for children, which includes a face-to-face interview and proof that a family has less than $2,000 in assets."

What a tear-jerker story.

But I think this identifies the real problem.... these folks think they deserve something. I suspect that you could give grandma a $720 tax-credit, and poor little Dedra still wouldn't get her eye-drops. People are reluctant to spend $$$ on things that they think they are entitled to in the first place. Someone -- liberals -- have filled this lady with false notions -- that she deserves something other than a level playing field.

I'm fully aware of what I deserve from the government. Zip. Nada. Zilch. And I live my life and manage my expenses accordingly.

I further suspect that if you gave sweet little ol' grandma a 50% raise, then revisited her situation in five years, she'd still have less than $2,000 in assets.

Why? Life is merely a string of choices -- and how you prioritize those choices defines its quality.
