I still buy a suit every now and then on 18th Avenue in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. I make the trip there for the following experience, which always comes off like clock work.
I look at the rack and say, I want that one. But first tell me how much it costs.
He shows me the price tag, I say that's too much.
He says, you know we never charge the sticker price. So he takes a hundred and fifty dollars off the sticker price and says it costs this much.
I ask, do you ever charge anyone the full sticker price?
He says, no, you ought to know better than that, you've been coming here for thirty years.
So, I say, why do you show me the sticker, then?
He says, I want to show me what it could cost you, and I just wanted to show you what a discount I'm giving you.
I always say thank you.
And so it goes. |
