Intel Corp. is ramping up Pentium 4 manufacturing and is on track to ship the new processor next month.

Intel Executive Vice President Paul Otellini told analysts during a third-quarter earnings conference call that the chip giant will produce hundreds of thousands of Pentium 4 processors this quarter.

Otellini comments come after Intel informed PC makers several weeks ago that it was delaying the delivery of the Pentium 4 until next month because of a chipset problem.

The manufacturing ramp for Pentium 4, the first new desktop processor architecture since the Pentium 2, will be steeper than the manufacturing ramp for Pentium 2, Otellini said.

Intel reported earnings of 41 cents a share, on net income of $2.9 billion, which was up from predictions of 38 cents a share according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

Sales were up to $8.73 billion compared to $7.33 billion for the second quarter.

Intel closed up $0.5 at $36.68 a share.
