TheStreet.com Slams Wireless handhelds, too fast, too soon, I thought we could get to know the hype some more.

I Don't Wanna Hold Your Hand-Held

How many hand-held devices and Net services do you need that tell you the best Italian restaurant south of Union Square?

The answer is, in a recession, none. You will go home to eat. When I think about all of the venture-capital money chasing that wireless goal, I want to stand up and scream. Don't they know that not everyone cares? Don't they know that not everyone will be able to care, given the tougher environment? Don't they know that a lot of people will just call someone they know and ask them? Or maybe just go to McDonald's (MCD:NYSE - news - boards)?

I have seen all of these hand-held devices and I like them. They are great for planning. They take up little space. They are great calendars. But the insistence on making them be able to ask and answer queries to databases leaves me totally cold. I just don't think there are many people who need these features -- and those that need them already have them. I think that knowing stocks and ball scores makes all of the sense in the world. I love that. But this endless desire to find the ideal restaurant is strictly an unmarried Manhattanite's deam.

Give it up.
