The wind farms at Altamont Pass in California needed government subsidies to continue to operate. They delivered a kw-hr cost worse than the utilities. They also needed a continuing supply of tax dodging investors looking for a way to report no income forever which the government thought was fair. The boondoggle grew into quite a fiasco until the price of oil collapsed. Then the subsidies had to be increased. The boondoggle didn't start disappearing until the Reagan Administration lowered taxes which also was attended by the alternative minimum tax. That ended the wind farms economic run, but they are still up there spinning away. The operators are convinced they are getting something for nothing. Maybe wireless has a taxing future too.
