Nothing else can communicate with ships on the high seas. Nothing else can communicate with trucks in remote areas. Right now satellites are providing phone and data coverage all over the world, and I don't mean Globalstar. @Home is cheaper that DirecTV, but there's a lot of places where @Home is never going to go. But what's foolish, I believe, are these grandiose top-down schemes like Iridium, Globalstar and Teledesic, to name the most well-known. Businesses don't grow from the top down, they grow from the bottom up. What makes sense is regional satellites providing regional services, I mean systems like Thuraya, Indostar, Koreasat and so forth. Not nearly as sexy and exciting, but these type of companies have a profitable business model. But I remain fascinated by the grandiose schemes, there is something admirable about reaching for the stars.
