Actually, I have no presuppositions about the racial characteristics pertinent to ownership. I do think that editorial diversity is a desideratum, but, again, I do not think that blackness or latinoness are genetic "essences", and it is likely that those who qualify for positions of responsibility will be relatively culturally assimilated. We do not consider it necessary to have all possible points of view institutionally represented, or we would reserve spots for black conservatives, Hasidim, Italians from Brooklyn and Poles from Chicago, and all possible variations. It is also potentially as demeaning to have an editor to represent the "black community" as it was to have women as society page editors. Why couldn't one have a black economics editor who never uttered a word on specifically black issues? Therefore, I think that reasonable diversity in the newsroom is desirable, but not necessary........
