The ASP angle is where both Corel and MS seem to be headed. Does Steve Ballmer think Corel can help Macrosnot with is execution in this arena? Is this just an infusion of cash to ensure Corel survives long enough to prove that MS in not a monopoly to trust busters? From the investing angle, the investment is in non-voting semi-convertible preferred shares that can only be converted by someone else. If MS gets pissed they can ruin the moral of Corel investors by dumping shares to depress the price for months.

Most linux installations are servers… I have vague memories of a company called Novell. Macrosnot had to give away their network OS to get any market penetration. Along came Windows for workgroups 3.11 (and its DOS add on). Down went LanTastic. Windows 95 came and Novell stock fell a bunch. Windows 98 came and Novell was struggling to get any sales at all, now they are trying to re-invent themselves. 5.0 and 5.1 don't easily support the pure IP the claim to.

Oh, yes did you say anything about Netscape having to sell to AOL when their market was crushed after Macrosnot rattled there chains about NT user version having a 5 user connection limit. There was a market comparison of NT (with free) web server against Netscape web server on NT 3.51 (what was the user version called?). Macrosnot pointed out that with their new connection limits that the Netscape server violated the EULA.

Try this one on. A linux kernal inside of windows (which could be severely performance limited) that has all kinds of compatibility issues. It could crash every time a competing product runs for more that an hour. (most of us remember the famous claimed quote "Windows isn’t done till 1-2-3 won’t run.")
