Thursday October 19, 8:03 am Eastern Time Press Release Echelon Licenses Insignia's Jeode Technology To Java-Enable LonWorks Networks FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 19, 2000--Insignia Solutions® (Nasdaq:INSGY - news), the leading provider of accelerated Java(TM) solutions for Internet appliances and embedded devices, announced today at the LONWorld2000(TM) Conference and Exposition that Echelon Corporation (Nasdaq:ELON - news), the world leader in networking everyday devices, has selected Insignia's accelerated Jeode(TM) platform. Echelon plans to employ Insignia's patent-pending virtual machine technology as a critical component of the Java foundation in Echelon's future Java enabled i.LON(TM) Internet Server products.
The agreement between Insignia and Echelon supports a partnership agreement announced May 4 this year between Echelon and Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq:SUNW - news), in which the two companies announced their intent to integrate LONWORKS® networks with Java technology-based services for set-top boxes, residential gateways, and other gateway devices. Key to the delivery of many of these services is Sun's Java Embedded Server (JES), a small footprint application server that enables deployment of Java technology-based applications and services over the Internet, dynamically and securely, on a just-in-time basis. JES requires a Java-compatible virtual machine as its runtime environment, thus the selection of Insignia's ``Sun Authorized Virtual Machine.'' In addition to supporting frameworks that are based on the Open Systems Gateway Initiative (OSGi), Insignia's Jeode platform can also be used by Echelon to offer direct Application Programming Interfaces to LONWORKS networks.
``Insignia's Jeode technology provides the full Java compatibility we expect along with the accelerated performance, responsiveness and robustness our customers demand for their applications,'' said Jeff Lund, vice president of business development with Echelon.
``LONWORKS networks are recognized as a de facto worldwide, cross-industry standard for networking everyday devices in homes, buildings, factories, and transportation systems,'' said Mark McMillan, executive vice president of worldwide sales and marketing for Insignia Solutions. ``We're delighted that Jeode technology has been selected as the Java-compatible runtime environment for use in Echelon's i.LON Server products and to be working with them to connect all of these devices to the Internet.''
Jeode Platform
The Jeode platform is Insignia's accelerated software implementation of Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq:SUNW - news) PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava specifications tailored for Internet appliances and embedded devices. At the core of the Jeode platform is the first independently-developed ``Sun Authorized Virtual Machine'', the Jeode Embedded Virtual Machine (EVM), an accelerated runtime engine that delivers an optimal balance of performance and responsiveness in a smaller memory footprint. Using a proprietary technique called dynamic adaptive compilation, the Jeode EVM can execute Java applications on average six times faster than interpretive VMs.
Key attributes include:
A full-featured software implementation compatible with Sun's PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava specifications Industry leading accelerated performance and efficient memory utilization. Configurability and tunability to meet the diverse needs of Internet appliance and embedded device developers A turn-key software solution already ported and tested on popular RTOS/processor combinations o World class support, training, consulting, customization and development tools The Jeode platform is designed to run with a wide range of operating systems and target processors. It currently supports operating systems such as Windows CE (including the Pocket PC version), Windows NT Embedded, Windows NT, VxWorks, ITRON and Linux, and processors such as MIPS, ARM, Intel x86, PowerPC and Hitachi SH-3 and SH-4.
