The Nokia contract's for GSM, while the Nortel contract's for W-CDMA. While the base station can support other technologies, new channel cards have to be added. My guess is that Nortel will be supplying them.
As others have said, a great quarter, although if slacker's comments about ASPs is true, then handset shipments rose by "only" 59%, which is lower than the last couple of quarters. That's great compared to Motorola and Ericsson, and it reflects some market share gains, but you'd figure that if overall industry growth was 50% or more in the prior quarters (remember that shipments grew 70% in '99), and Nokia slashed prices significantly at the expense of margins in order to gain market share, the shipment number would be in the 65% range. This has to be reflective of the fact that this industry is slowing down quite a bit, although its overall growth is still quite impressive.
Also, Puck, John's correct about the currency issue. If you're planning on one day spending your Nokia profits in the form of US dollars, you have to look at the company's bottom line in terms of dollars as well, and so for you (and me), the company's profit growth was in the 25% range.

PS - slacker, did you hear anything in the CC about GSM-based GPRS, MP3, or PDA phones? |
