Investment in startups is a big business for Microsoft. I think profits in that sector should have the same place as "operating" profits, i.e. they should not be considered as some unusual windfall. I'm not recommending the purchase of MSFT, just pointing out something. Lots of companies are realizing that their expertise in some area can give them an edge over non-operating VC firms in judging the future promise of fledgling firms in their own area.
