NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Shares of Honeywell jumped 17 percent in after-hours trading Thursday on the heels of a report that the company will be acquired by United Technologies for $40 billion.

A Honeywell spokesman declined to comment on the report by CNBC. A spokesman for United Technologies did not immediately return phone calls.

Shares of Honeywell (HON: news, msgs) rose to $42.50 in after-market activity, up from a closing price Thursday of $36.13. United Technologies (UTX: news, msgs) shares remained near their closing level of $68.

If the deal is struck, it would unite two of the nation's largest aerospace and industrial concerns. Both are also components of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
