Understand your comment but in the case of Intel, for example, they are trying consciously to re-invent themselves and one of their strategies is to use their cash to buy what they see as critical future technologies.
Not withstanding the innovators dilemma, it may work, we'll just have to wait and see.
All of which goes back to my original comment.
