Frank: Someone on TV last night said that Colin Powell never would have risen in the ranks of the Army, nor become a poster person for the GOP, if not for affirmative action. Reminds me of Tip O'Neill's book when he addressed an audience of top business leaders and asked the magnates how many were in favor of expanding government's role in helping the less fortunate. Only a few hands went up. Then he asked the audience how many had taken advantage of the G.I. bill after WWII, and about 70 percent of the hands went up. How soon the Republicans forget that they, too, also benefit from government programs.
