Competition: EMC "Chameleon"

There was a discussion on yahoo about EMC's coming NAS box and someone
replied that they have seen the "specs" and there's not much there. I
entered a reply [1] to see if they had more detailed info. The reply [2]
was: "Its the DG product that usese the Filesystem from Crosstor. None of
the advanced features of NTAP."

There was a further reply [3] to a question about former Data General (DG)
employees that worked on that now EMC box, working for NTAP. Apparently,
when NTAP created their North Carolina Research Triangle Park (RTP) location,
they scooped up some Data General NAS employees around the time EMC
bought Data General.

What does this all mean, if true?

1) EMC is using third party software from Crosstor for this product. That
means EMC has no in-house proprietary file system software and the likelihood
that their NAS product will be anything earth-shattering is minimal.

2) NTAP, if they have former Data General people in house, has good
intelligence on what this product is and its capabilities. I would guess
that they also get this information from their own customers who get
product "roadmap" presentations from EMC sales people. NTAP would be
prepared to counter this product.

We'll see when the product is announced in Q4-CY2000 or Q1-CY2001 whether
this is near the truth.
