Gary Burton: There is validity to break away gaps, I have found them to be more reliable with individual stocks after a basing pattern. Frankly, I recently got burned betting on a stock that had a break away gap near the end of a steady decline.

If you take a cruise back over the COMPX chart you will find a lot of gaps both up and down. Note the break away gap from 4/17 to 4/18. You can also see one at the first bottom during the 98 decline...9/1 to 9/2.
