I remember reading historical tales like that, too. But you needn't go back so far.

To be true, some of today's political rancor and inability to achieve bi-partisan compromise between Republicans and Democrats probably can be directly attributed to fairly recent tax law changes limiting things like deductibility of the three-martini lunch. Former Speaker Tip O'Neill, famous for on-the-floor partisan theatrics followed by after-hours toasting alongside the opposition, where things really got done, probably would be the first to support that assertion. Ask Chris Matthews of "Hardball" on CNBC. Otoh, some like Ted Kennedy already are probably too-far toasted to know the difference, and are merely bickering old men.

Another reason to change the tax laws.
