Imagine if Intel could distance themselves from their switched IO competitors by providing a unique value-add service at the IO?

Is anybody on this thread familiar with EXCA ? If not I suggest you read the announcement made in May by Intel. In a nutshell, Intel spun off it's Interactive Media Services Division and combined it with EXCA (for a stock swap). The new company will now be called Convera

EXCA has the patents on searching for sounds and images.

I have been wondering if Intel will eventually leverage it's emerging position in next gen I/O WITH this new company ??
In other words, they make a product that has switched I/O *WITH* advanced search capabilities. That would simply blow away the competition to smithereens.

Thus, in value chain speak: Intel could combine their gorilla prowess in the I/O semiconductor layer (switched IO) WITH an enabling technology in the system software/ application layer (search capabilities).

This has potential to be a text book case of a gorilla straddling various layers of the value chain-- eventually becoming _the _ mother_ gorilla of intelligent IO.

I thought this was a good thread to try out the theory.
