The first Friday poll:
Presidential Tracking Poll
On Friday morning, the Portrait of America Presidential Tracking Poll finds George W. Bush leading Al Gore by a 46% to 41% margin. The percentages are based on 3,000 interviews, conducted Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. 2,000 of the interviews were conducted on Wednesday and Thursday, following Tuesday's Presidential debate.
It seems clear Governor Bush has retained his lead following the third and final debate. The survey data for the 2,000 interviews completed after the debate also show the GOP candidate with a 5-point lead.
So, it appears that neither candidate gained ground with the voters during the final debate. If that pattern holds, it's good news for George W. Bush, since Al Gore needs something to turn this race around. From Labor Day until the first debate, the race for the White House has essentially been even. Since that first debate, however, Bush has gained ground and held a steady lead.
The telephone survey of 3,000 likely voters was conducted on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday October 17, 18, and 19. The survey’s margin of sampling error is +/- 1.8 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.
Rasmussen Research has interviewed at least 750 likely voters every night since March 20 in the Presidential Tracking Poll. Recently, we increased our sample to 1,000 Likely Voters per night.
