* VeDSL:

The mentioned that VeDSL (the name AWRE uses) is available on ADI chipsets, but that wasn't new news. However they mentioned other names used to describe VeDSL. Maybe someone can help me here...was it AWRE's VeDSL with other names or are there other VeDSL technologies from other companies?

My understanding is as follows...

At a high level there are competing technology for Voice over DSL. 1) Voice over IP 2) Voice over ATM and 3) Voice at layer 1 over DSL (aka VeDSL). Voice Enabled DSL shares the layer 1 modulation scheme with the data traffic similar to the way voice packets share the packet stream with data in VoIP. My understanding is that VeDSL is gaining traction in the market because it is less costly to implement in CO equipment and that it has less latency that Voice over IP. The ILECs dig it.

I think that Centillium, Aware, Cisco and maybe TI were early to the party in proposing VeDSL. Centillium claims to have 6 design wins with their Entropia chipset, one of which is Alcatel. Globespan claims to be also working feverishly on this but appears to be a laggard. It seems that VeDSL is a VERY important technology for the industry but is at least 12 months away from significant deployment IMHO.
