64M DRAM Chip Prices Approach Year-Low Levels

Prices of 64M DRAM chips fell again on international spot markets Wednesday, sending a chill across the local semiconductor industry. At North American spot markets, 8Mx8 PC 100 chips were trading at US$4.90-$5.19. This made for a 1.01% drop from the previous day, when the same chips were hit by a 7.99% plunge in price. Accordingly, worries are spreading that prices are headed towards the yearly low of US$4.50 set in March. With the manufacturing cost for 64M DRAM chips currently at US$3.50 for Samsung Electronics and US$4.00 for Hyundai Electronics, profit margins are becoming dangerously narrow.

Meanwhile, the price of 128M DRAM chips, which are becoming the mainstay product of local semiconductor firms, remained relatively stable, with 16Mx8 PC 133 chips trading at US$13.35-$14.15.

Market analysts say the continued downfall in the price of 64M DRAM chip products is attributable to a slowdown in global sales of PCs, which account for 80% of the demand for the chips.
