NYers favor Yankees over the Mets

NEW YORK, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- New Yorkers think the Yankees will win the World
Series over the Mets in the first Subway Series in 44 years, according to two
polls released Thursday.

New York state registered voters back the Yankees over the Mets 47 percent to 34
percent, the Hamden, Conn.-based Quinnipiac University poll. Suburban voters
split evenly at 43 percent between the Bombers and the Amazin's. Upstate voters
back the Yankees 52 percent over the Mets' 26 percent, while New York City
voters cheer for the Yankees 43 to 37 percent.

However, just as in the political elections, there is a gender gap. Women are
bigger Yankees' fans than men, backing the Bombers 49 to 31 percent. Men cheer
for the Yankees 44 to 38 percent.

"Maybe it's the Derek Jeter factor, but women are more solidly for the Yankees
than men," said pollster Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University
Polling Institute.

There's also a generation gap. "Baseball fans 65 and over, who grew up with the
Dodgers and the Giants, split almost evenly, 37 to 34 percent, on whether they
back the Yankees or the Mets in the Subway Series. Younger fans back the Bombers
by pretty solid margins," said Carroll. The poll surveyed 1,273 New York state
voters from Oct. 12-16, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage
points.

A poll by the Poughkeepsie, N.Y.-based Marist College Institute for Public
Opinion found 55 percent of New Yorkers think the Yankees would win while the
Mets drew 34 percent.

Marist questioned 769 New York state registered voters Oct. 10-11. The poll has
a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Even the U.S. Senate candidates have their favorites, Democrat Hillary Rodham
Clinton said she is rooting for the Yankees, while her Republican opponent Rep.
Rick Lazio favors the Mets.

However, both teams can look forward to a parade no matter what the outcome. In
a surprising twist, the Albany, N.Y. Chamber of Commerce invited the losing
World Series team to parade in the state capital, 150 miles north of New York
City.

The winning World Series team will most likely get the traditional parade along
the "Canyon of Heroes" along an avenue of Manhattan skyscrapers.
