Charles - I think you are right that PCs should be "instant on". My laptop is pretty close to that. I have the power switch set to "hibernate" so when I'm done working, or want to go somewhere, I just hit the switch. When I power back up everything is right where I left it. I have not "re-booted" this laptop in more than 2 months, but it is turned off several times a day.

There is no reason that you can't do that on a desktop except that the BIOS support for the power switch is usually not there. No reason to give up any features to get "instant on".
