Bingo - you hit on Avici's fatal flaw...

The fact that their oversized chassis must be directly connected in a row will require a lot of space in a service providers equipment room, and space is usually scarce. That could diminish their prospects for the long term.

Pluris and IronBridge will use fiber optic cables to interconnect their chassis over hundreds of meters, which offers greater flexibility.

That brings us to Charlotte's Web. The reason I say that cluster's don't scale is because if you have to use I/O capacity to interconnect, as the cluster grows, more and more I/O is wasted connecting the boxes instead of being used to generate revenues.

<<Up to 16 interfaces may be combined into a single "trunk-pipe" delivering OC768 (40Gbps) for inter-cluster links, using DWDM technology.">>

RHK has shown that up to 70% of router interface capacity can be consumed by clustering. Carriers want scalable architectures primarily to avoid the need for clustering.

I would like to believe that CW has a good box - but why are these claims of beta trials and imminent revenue shipments being kept a secret? If they can't announce, how do we know they are real?

And what about my real question - whats wrong with Juniper? Why they don't have a plan for a terabit router? Even Cisco has announced a plan to scale the 12016 up to hundreds of gigabits.

Anyone care to answer that one?
