We always wind up talking to construction workers when ever we travel. I remember talking for quite a while with a Mexican worker down near Cancun who was working on a hotel. He had learned his skill back in the states. He said he worked 10 hour days and was paid $50 a day and said, "In Mexico, man, that is GOOD money." Here he would make 15-20 an hour doing what he does but he feels he can live better down there with the lower wage.

People need to vote with their feet a little more. Maybe in California you can't buy a house for under $150k but here in Baltimore City you can still buy a house in a decent neighborhood for $60k and live like a king in a house that sells for $350k.

My brother-in-law owns a fairly famous diner in South Philadelphia. The workers there maybe make 12-15k a year but with very good benefits. My first reaction is why would anyone work for him? Yet he has third generation workers from one family and people that have worked for him for 20 years....he has very little turn over. Obviously they like working there, because there are lots of opportunities above that scale now. There are many other factors aside from money that motivate people to make certain employment choices.

The statistic that blows my mind over and over is the savings rate for the Asians living here in this country. Even families living on less than 20k save 20-25%. I'm almost certain that if you spoke to these people and asked, none of them would refer to themselves as "poor", just like the guy in Mexico telling us that $50 a day was good money.
