We, down here in the states pay a lot as well. The best one I've seen in recent times was the "temporary" tax increase in SF due to the '89 earthquake. It gave the benevolent government a reason to raise the sales tax to 8.25% for just a little while. It's nearly 2001 and that 8.25% ain't going anywhere.

Another one is the hidden city tax called "parking violation". You have never seen a government function run as efficiently as the traffic enforcement division in SF. I read a stat a while back that said SF receives more money each year in parking violation fines than they collect in city taxes.

Good one huh.
