FW, it's more a sad reflection on the pathetic management teams that have historically run the RBOCs (of which Verizon is still essentially one).

One mistake many are prone to is assuming that the US wireless operators will move towards 2.5 and 3G system rollouts and upgrades on a schedule that makes sense to their shareholders. History has shown us that they are usually dragged tooth and nail before they embrace any innovative upgrade of their systems (I'm still waiting for DSL 5 years later). To assume that the US Operators will move as rapidly as the Japanese or the South Koreans would be wrong. To me, the discussions between Nok and Verizon are simply a symptom of Verizon's inability to make a commitment to move off their current CDMA generation platform any time in the near future.

Believe me, I wish these RBOCs were different!
