Why Barrett is afraid of Rambus

Rambus has threatened to shut down any DRAM maker who goes the distance in litigation and loses. Where does that leave Intel if a major memory maker is shut down. The price of DRAM would skyrocket and fewer PC's would get sold. Intel's stock would tank as a result. Additionally, a steep P4 ramp would be constrained by the availabilty and price of RDRAM, which is why Intel now is seriously looking at DDR as a back up. However Intel is contractually prohibitted from developing DDR for desktop applications, so it would need Rambus cooperation to press ahead in this direction. Rambus would have to be compensated for this favor, since allowing DDR to gain a foothold is obviously not in Rambus interest. This all adds up to a less than glowing marriage until these issues are resolved. Barrett is venting his frustration over these problems since control of the situation is in Rambus court not Intel's. Rambus is in a position to wreck havoc on the industry and Intel is clearly concerned. so why should anyone be surprised at Barrett's comments. should long's be concerned? if Rambus patent's are as strong as Tate claims, it should eventually work out in a way that rewards the faithful shareholder. It's been a bumpy road and surely there will be more bumps as events play out in the forthcoming months
