Hi Ben,

<< is my understanding also incorrect that the three modes (wCDMA, CDMA2000 and a possible China candidate) functioning in conformance with this proposal would be capable of communication without smart cards or dual mode chipsets? >>

Sorry to be a PITB on this, but the (smart card SIM/USIM) is a mandated "physical component" of 3G3.

China insisted on this for 2G narrowband.

The good news is that CDG & 3GPP2 (and TIA) at the urging of OHG are getting into compliance on this quickly, but there is still a gap to get SIM/USIM/R-UIM cdma multi-mode phones into the market. Nice to see a 2G version out of China. Several manufacturers have them in the wings.

<< also, welcome back! >>

Thank you.

I'm kinda in and out. Travelling a lot on business, and I try to catch up the wireless threads on weekends.

In the interim, you are doing a GREAT job on the wireless threads, and if I have to take short cuts to catch up, I always make sure to read your posts. You are a highly credible poster on wireless matters, and your time spent on ongoing DD is commendable.
