Clearly a 3 horse race at this point. Compaq,
Dell and HP all had a solid Q in terms of shipments.
Let's look at this from another perspective rather
than the usual Q/Q and Y/Y percentage growth numbers.
A good way to view the numbers is in terms of
quarter to quarter unit growth worldwide.

From the table below it's easy to see what happened
to Dell in Q4 and Q1 when they hit the wall. But now
it looks to me like they are getting back on track.
384k unit growth is the best they've had since
their biggest growth quarters ever in Q2/Q3 99 where
they grew revenues sequentially by 600M+ each quarter.
With this number it looks like they are on track at
the very least to meet their revised 8.2B number.

Q/Q WW Unit shipment growth

Q300 Q200 Q100 Q499 Q399 Q299 Q199 Q498
Dell 384 254 -157 118 414 374 136 282
Compaq 366 18 -583 708 86 -211 -227 998
HP 360 -213 -9 615 184 99 -78 176

Compaq has been pretty erratic and the Q4
seasonality really shows. But their Q2 to Q3
increase is one of their best showings for this
period and bodes well for a strong earnings report.
