Twfowler: re democratic socialism..

I only made that point because most americans associate "socialism" = "communism" = 1 party rule.. when there are plenty of democracies that have social democratic parties or democratic socialist parties out there.

The point is..the assumption that Canada is socialist because we believe in controlling our guns and for that matter because we believe the state has a postiive role to play in such things as universal medicare is a superficial assumption.. there are social democratic tendencies up here not prevalent in the US.. but in the 60 yrs of the existence of socialist parties up here.. they have never gottn more then 18% of the popular vote nd no more then 32 seats out of 240-290 in the Parliament. We tend to like some of their ideas re: medicare and baby bonuses etc.. causing the ruling party of the time (usually the Liberals) to implement some of their policies.. but not enough to put the actual socialist party or social democratic party in power.
