Mad2,

I only "know" of anecdotal information somewhat related to that assumption. I had heard on CNBC (either Wednesday or Thursday) that the margin dollars were still sitting at or very near record levels, and that the bulk of that was net long in "good" stocks (as opposed to dot coms or other high-growth, high-risk equities). That's supposedly why the drop in the Dow on Wednesday(?) was so pronounced, because it was exacerbated by margin calls for "good" stocks.
