I once read a book entitled "God spoke Tibetian", it started with an evangelist who had spent nearly his entire life gaining entrance into Tibet in order to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. In the early 1900's it was uncommon for any westerner to be allowed entrance and only by divine intervention was he allowed in and ultimately found at the door of a man which would be influential in translating the word of God into the Tibetian language. This man he met had been of a royal lineage but was falsely accused of a crime and had fled from the city. This is how the trial went: A ruling priest takes drugs and then calls upon spirits to give him guidance. In Christianity we call it possession. Well this accused man was brought before him and after the charges were read the priest now fully possessed as proved by super human strength and a completely different visage glared at him and condemned him to death. The man escaped having a foreknowledge of the outcome and with the help of his most trusted servants and his great wealth had started a new life in a beautiful hidden mountain valley. After coming into contact with the western evangelist he soon received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and entrusting everything to his steward went off to obey the calling of God on his life. He had a great desire to translate the word of God into his native tongue and to see the shackles of spiritual bondage fall off his people but the obstacles were tremendous.

The people believe in something called the circle of life and everywhere people had little things that would rotate. Beggars had them, children had them, everyone had them from the time they were born till the time they died. Some were placed in rivers so the currents would keep them rotating. To not have them rotate was a disgrace so great was their superstition. There were some people who were the poorest of the poor in the world. The only thing they had was the clothes on their backs. They didn't live indoors for the most part and would hire themselves out as human scarecrows in the fields in order to eat. Material possessions were not even seemingly desired so they were considered blessed by some of the populace rather than pitied. Of course very few lived past the age of 30 due to the elements.

You talk about peace in Tibet but from what I had read in the book I saw poverty, ignorance, and very little hope for the future. Is this the enlightenment of Buddha you speak about?
