Alas, what I fear will happen is that vouchers will create a system of inferior private schools, which take voucher money and actually do a worse job of education that we are getting now. Of course the middle and upper middle class kids won't have to be in the inferior system- if their parents are willing to pay more, to supplement their voucher, they will be able to go to a decent private school. And the public schools will be left with the kids who the private schools won't take, or whose parents simply don't care.

But it is the egalitarian aspect of this that is predominant to me. We are one nation of very diverse people. We are already pulling apart more than we are pulling together. I will cherish and support those institutions that keep us one people- and I firmly believe public education is one of those few institutions. If it is broken, then we fix it. I certainly do not want to weaken it in any way.

As for the environment- I think my children are hurt more if I ruin their environment than if I have to cut back on luxuries to pay for energy. I'm a very committed environmentalist- so we won't agree on this I think.

On social security- no one is proposing anything that sounds like it will work. So I don't like either of the candidates on that issue.
