And then there was Sun, which came out with the kind of quarter companies dream about even in the best of times. All Sun managed to do was report 60% revenue growth and earnings that topped even the bullish forecasts, a clear indication that the maker of high-end computers is increasing its lead on its competitors.

I suspect the reason Sun did so well has to do with their Sun Cluster software. A lot of people want the cluster, but only way Sun will sell it to you is if every single component of the system (including external RAID boxes and SANs) came from Sun *and* if you hired Sun ES to install and configure the whole thing for you.

Customers who have no choice are obliging Sun, but when the day comes, they will be what IBM when it fell from the grace in late 80s.
