The purpose of taxes is to make us equal. It's called the Robin Hood theory of economics. Long time ago I was wondering about why we had a graduated tax rate. I thought it wasn't very "fair" to tax those people that made more money at a higher rate. The person I asked explained it to me this way: As you get higher on the income scale more of your income is derived not from your own labor, but from the labor of other people. I'm not arguing this point is correct just pointing it out.
