Also from Newsweek: Good news for Gore and Dem Congress: "While last week Bush led among men, 49 percent to 39 percent, and Gore led among women, 48 percent to 39 percent, the differences this week are much smaller. In fact, Bush’s lead among men has been eliminated (42-42) and Gore’s edge among women is statistically insignificant (47-43). While the race for the White House remains volatile, the race for Capitol Hill seems to be edging in the Democrats’ favor. Among registered voters, Democratic congressional candidates hold a 51 percent to 39 percent lead over Republicans. That’s up from a 48-to-42 split last week. Likely voters favor Democratic candidates by a narrower, 47-to-43 margin. The Newsweek poll was conducted Oct. 18 through Oct. 20 by Princeton Survey Research Associates. Results are based on telephone interviews with 1,007 registered voters. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent for registered voters, plus or minus 4 percent for likely voters."
