CDMA technology, pretender to the throne of the ubiquitous GSM standard, took a major step forward on Monday with the unveiling of the world's first CDMA-GSM interoperable SIM card and compatible handsets in Beijing, China.

The news brings Qualcomm a step closer to its goal of converting China to CDMA technology, particularly after China Unicom confirmed its intention to build a CDMA narrow-band network on the same day.

The new SIM (subscriber access module) card, dubbed GemXplore World by manufacturer GemPlus was used in conjunction with a GSM/CDMA handset developed by state-owned Chinese manufacturer Zhongxing Telecom Equipment Co. (ZTE) to make a successful call to Qualcomm chief executive Dr Irwin Jacobs, the companies said.

The breakthrough will now allow CDMA operators to offer the global roaming services previously restricted to GSM and gain the associated financial rewards, the companies said.

There have been mixed signals from China, potentially the world's largest mobile market, about plans for CDMA. Some city networks use the technology but most of the country's mobile networks use GSM.

Qualcomm stands to gain because it earns royalties on CDMA handsets and network equipment. Chief executive Irwin Jacobs told Reuters the company hoped Unicom would build a large network by the end of the year. <<
