A democracy is about majority rule with minority rights, correct?

No.

It never quite works out like that does it,

It always works out that way. You have to trust in democracy just like you have to trust in free markets. Whatever is gained in one quarter is lost in another. This is what you should have gleaned from American History. We can choose to be less efficient or more poor, or we can choose otherwise. We are free to choose and our representative democracy accomplishes that.

because there are frequent instances where minority rights are abridged by the majority as well as instances where powerful minorities have been able to hold sway over what the majority wants.

That isn't a valid reason for thinking that it doesn't quite work. For example, I can assure you that we will have a flat 10% tax rate, but that will be in the future. It will occur because it will need to occur. Forces exist which will gradually change the people's thinking about taxation and they'll shut down the war on wealth. Meanwhile I have to pay a lot of money to hurt people. My rights aren't abridged by heavy taxes demanded by the tyranny of the majority. I only say that everyone would benefit by having a lower flat tax. Fear and ignorance is what keeps the inefficient regime in place.

Not true, never has been. If that were the case I wouldn't waste my time arguing against an immovable object such as yourself.

But you do argue that "a democracy is about majority rule with minority rights and that it never quite works out like that does it, because there are frequent instances where minority rights are abridged by the majority" You are saying that a democracy without that characteristics isn't doable, so you go for the bad. Thus it is true and it has been so.
